OK, I’m really upset that I’m missing the Scofield, Abercrombie, Stern show tonight… but I’m off to Montreal for that fine city’s jazz festival.

Bjorkestra, is a NYC based 18 piece big band that plays arrangements of the music of Bjork. You can catch them Sunday June 29th at Lee’s Palace as part of the Toronto Jazz Festival. Check them out!

It’s here! Yes, the Toronto Jazz festival is upon us with much to see and hear.
Tonight at the Rex you can catch Joe and Pat LaBarbera at 9:45pm, and at 1:15am Phil Dwyer.
The Pilot has Kollage in Saturday afternoon from 3:30 – 6:30 pm, and the Sugar Daddies Sunday.
Friday at The Trane Studio you can catch Michael Occhipinti’s Sicilian Jazz Project at 9:30pm, and SUnday it’s Rich Brown & Rinsethealgorithm.
And finally, tonight at Gate 403 you can catch the Chantelle Wilson Jazz Band at 5:00 pm and String Theory at 9:00pm. Friday it’s the Ventana 5 Jazz Band followed by the Max Senitt Latin Band at 9:00pm.

Swedish pianist and composer Esbjorn Svensson died in a diving accident on Saturday June 14, 2008 aged 44. The married father of two had been found badly injured on the sea bed and had been transported by helicopter to a Stockholm hospital, where he died shortly before midnight on Saturday.
Esbjorn Svensson was one of the most influential jazz artists in recent history and his band e.s.t. were considered one of the most successful jazz groups in Europe and beyond.
On Monday, the band announced the cancellation of their Canadian tour. They had been scheduled to perform in Toronto on June 27.
DMBQ Live is the first recording from the Davidson/Murley/Braid Quintet (DMBQ). This collaboration between Juno Award winners Mike Murley (saxophone) and David Braid (piano), and emerging artist Tara Davidson (saxophone) showcases world-class improvisation and great songwriting. Recorded at The Western Front in Vancouver, this recording captures a fantastic performance full of spontaneity, interplay and a simple celebration of the music. Truly a treat to listen to.
Stand out track include Davidson’s Reason Season Lifetime and Braid’s Say a silent prayer, and The call.
Completing the quintet is the dynamic rhythm section of Jim Vivian (bass) and New Yorker Ian Froman (drums).
Make sure you catch them June 27th at The Rex, or 29th at Nathan Phillips Square as part of the Toronto Jazz Festival.
Ok, so the big thing to is the Art of Jazz Festival going on down in the Distillery district. To much to list hear so just o check it out.
Tonight at the Rex at 9:30 pm you can catch the Nowlin-Mulholland Quintet who are in from Indiana. Friday things get going early with the Hogtown Syncopators followed at 6:30 by the David French and then Kelsley Grant at 9:30 pm. Saturday the Ross MacIntyre Trio gets things going before Jenn Ryan & Cash Cow at 9:30 pm.
The Pilot has the Bob Brough Quartet in Saturday afternoon from 3:30 – 6:30 pm, and the Maurizio Valente Quartet Sunday.
The Soleia Jazz Piano Concert Series is in full swing at The Trane Studio where you can catch Robi Botos tonight at 9:00 pm.
And finally, tonight at Gate 403 you can catch the Sarah Jerrom Jazz Trio at 5:00 pm, and Friday it’s the Mike Field Jazz Duo.
