The daughter of the late jazz saxophonist Joe Farrell is suing Kanye West, three other rappers and several record labels for allegedly using samples from Farrell’s recordings without permission.
Well it’s that time of year again and the good people of Art of Jazz will be taking over the Distillery District June 4-8 for five days of concerts, themed programs, workshops and jam sessions.
Clinics held by Steve Kuhn, Sheila Jordan, Hermeto Pascoal and Egberto Gismonti form the educational side of the festival and the list of live concerts includes a tribute to jazz icon, John Norris featuring performances by Randy Weston, the Wray Downes Quartet, the Dan Block/Jon-Erik Kellso Quintet and Jim Galloway’s Wee Big Band; Egberto Gimsonti and Friends featuring the Penderecki String Quartet and Trechy Sankaran; and Hermeto Pascoal with the Art of Jazz Orchestra conducted by Jovino Santos Neto.
Other performances on the schedule include the Cindy Blackman Quartet, Sheila Jordan and Steve Kuhn, Randy Weston and Billy Harper and Gene DiNovi with Dave Young. The festival also features a series of free outdoor performances, an Afro Cuban party, Jazz for Juniors, jazz on film and books and more.

Tonight at the Rex you can catch Buddy Aquilina at 9:30 pm. Friday things get going early with the Hogtown Syncopators followed at 6:30 by the Sultans of String and then Ricochet Feat: Adrean Farrugia. Saturday the Lester McLean Trio gets things going before the Vern Dorge Quintet at 9:30 pm.
The Pilot has the Jake Wilkinson Quartet in Saturday afternoon from 3:30 – 6:30 pm, and the Richard Whiteman Quartet Sunday.
Tonight at The Trane Studio You’ll want to catch the Brownman Electryc Trio at 9:30pm. Friday Peek takes the stage at 9:00 pm.
An finally, at the Dominion on Queen tonight you can catch the Jack Zorawski Quartet at 8:30 pm.
