Classic jazz finally finds a Downtown Jazz Festival home at the Palais Royale

Climax Jazz Band, Hogtown Syncopators and American guests join Healey’s
Jazz Wizards for gala concert Wed. June 27

The ghosts of Louis Armstrong, Fats Waller, Duke Ellington and Benny Goodman — all of whom played at Toronto’s historic Palais Royale lakeshore dance hall — will be smiling Wednesday June 27, when the totally renovated and rebuilt venue plays host to Jeff Healey’s Jazz Band Ball.
Healey’s band, The Jazz Wizards, hosts the only major classic jazz event during the annual TD Canada Trust Downtown Jazz Festival. Three special guests — banjo wizard Marty Grosz, clarinetist Dan Levinson and bass saxist Vince Giordano, who have all guested on Healey’s albums — will join the band.
The Climax Jazz Band, Toronto’s longest-running traditional jazz band, will be on the bill, as will the Hogtown Syncopators, an energetic skiffle band fronted by Terra Hazleton, who frequently joins the Wizards as the band’s featured vocalist.
“This is a dream come true,” said Healey, who plays both trumpet and guitar with the Wizards. “I’ve never played a major gig during the Downtown Jazz Festival, and to play one at this venue on a summer evening, with a whole group of friends, is a very special occasion.
“As my blues and rock fans know, this is my kind of jazz. And to even stand on the stage where my heroes once played is a unbelievable thrill.”
