Toronto Jazz Festival 2007


Well the line up for this years jazz festival is starting to be revealed, and this years performers will include the Dave Brubeck Quartet, Oscar Peterson, and the Keith Jarrett Trio.

Keith Jarrett on Friday, June 29

All performances start at 8pm at the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts Tickets are on sale now at the Four Seasons Centre Box Office

Order of Canada

Congratulations go out to two Canadian bassists that have been appointed to the Order of Canada. Toronto’s David Young currently plays bass for Oscar Peterson. Young was selected ‘Bassist of the Year’ by The National Jazz Awards in 2003 and 2004. Also appointed, Quebec bassist Michael Donato. Over his 40 year career, Donato has played in several groups with the likes of Thelonious Monk, Charles Mingus and Miles Davis.

David Braid Sextet’s CD Release

Well it’s been a long time coming, but the David Braid Sextet is finally doing an official launch for there CD ZHEN: The David Braid Sextet Live Vol. II. which was released back in September. You can catch them perform Thursday and Friday at The Rex at 9pm.

With Braid as leader, pianist and composer, the ensemble comprises the international talents of Terry Clarke, Mike Murley, Steve Wallace, Gene Smith and John MacLeod.

This will be a hot ticket with Braid recently receiving two Juno nominations, and seven National Jazz Award nominations: Keyboardist; Arranger; Socan Composer; Album (ZHEN); Acoustic Ensemble (Murley Braid Quartet, and David Braid Sextet); and, Musician of the Year. Not bad!

Live Jazz Thursday

Tonight The Rex presents The Dave Smith Quintet for the first of a two night visit at 9:30pm. Tomorrow at 4pm it’s the Hogtown Syncopators followed by Runcible Spoon at 6:30pm. Saturday you can catch Archie Alleyne’s Kollage.

The Brian Dickinson Trio is in for three nights starting tonight at Opal Jazz Lounge.

Tonight you can also catch the Scott Kemp Jazz collective at Gate 403 starting at 9pm.

Saturday catch the Dave Smith Quartet from 3:30 – 6:30PM at The Pilot, and follow up Sunday with Kollage.
