Some of you may know that I’m a graphic designer by day, so when I saw that destination-out.com decided to explore Sam Rivers and his album Hues… well I couldn’t resist.

Synesthesia – what colors do you hear? Vladimir Nabokov talked about certain words and letters evoking different tints and shades for him and it’s a rare but documented phenomenon. In the case of Rivers’s Hues, the concept may be a bit forced but the music is unusually vivid.”

Live Jazz Thursday

Amanda Martinezis in tonight for one night only at the Dominion on Queen. The Marieve Herrinton Trio is in tomorrow starting at 9pm.

Tonight at The Rex the Dan Weiss Trio is in from New York for the fist of a two night stay. Saturday the Laura Hubert Band takes over at 7pm.

Brazil: Unplugged and intimate is on tonight at The Red Guitar and features Nick “Brownman” Ali on flugelhorn and Reg Schwager on guitar. Friday brings Club Django followed by the Quinsin Nachoff Trio at 10:15pm. for the first of a two night stay. Saturday they follow Toronto Jazz Vocalist George Evans.

And finally… if your looking for the perfect way to unwind from the weekend Sunday check out the Barry Elmes Quartet at The Pilot between 3:30 – 6:30pm.

Dark Magus

Dark Magus: The Jekyll and Hyde Life of Miles Davis. A new book on Miles Davis, written by his son Gregory, has just been published.

Gregory Davis is the eldest of Miles Davis’s four children. Born in 1945 in St. Louis, Missouri, Gregory traveled extensively with his father from the time he was around 11 years old. During Miles’s fusion period, Gregory served as his father’s assistant road manager and bodyguard. Gregory, who is also a trumpet player, graduated from Long Island University with a master’s degree in psychology. He has four children and lives in New York City.
