JazzTO Forum

Guess what? We got hacked!
If you had a little trouble viewing JazzTo it was because our databases got wiped out sometime in the last 24 hours. Luckily I had backed up Friday so the only post we lost was was the one stating that the forum would be down temporarily for some maintenance. Well it’s still down since I spent the morning resurecting the site, and upgrading the security so that this hopfully won’t happen again. I’ll get the forum back online as soon as I can… but now I’ve got to go watch the World Cup Final.
Cheers!

3rd annual Canadian Guitar Festival

While not stricly jazz, I think there are a few guitar pickers out there that might want to check this out.

3rd annual Canadian Guitar Festival
July 21st-23rd at the Odessa Fair Grounds
(11 kms west of Kingston near Highway 401)
canadianguitarfestival.com

The Canadian Guitar Festival once again takes to the stage with many homegrown and international guitarists. Some performers include 2005 Juno Award winner and three-time nominee Robert Michaels; East Coast Music Award winner J.P. Cormier; Artist of the Year 2000 and 2002 from the Music Industry Association of Newfoundland and Labrador Duane Andrews; Italian virtuoso Pino Forastiere; Norwegian song- writer Kerstin Blodig; Scotland’s Ian Melrose; Canadian-based singer/songwriter Andrew White from New Zealand, American virtuoso Michael Chapdelaine – the only guitarist ever to win First Prize in the world’s top competitions in both the Classical and Fingerstyle genres; and Canadian legend Don Ross who has been touring with the “Men of Steel” whom have just released their newest CD four way mirror.

All that and workshops to.

Montreal Bistro Closes Doors After 25 Years

Well we’ve all heard the rumors, but it doesn’t make it any easier a pill to swallow. A note taped to the door yesterday said it all.

“Dear Patrons, The Montreal Bistro has closed its doors for good. Thank you for all your support and loyalty for so many years,”

The 120-seat Bistro has hosted legends such as Oscar Peterson and Phil Nimmons and nurtured the early days of Diana Krall and Joshua Redman.

“When you sat on that stage you were surrounded by jazz history,” recalled pianist Ron Davis.

The Bistro’s demise coming exactly one year after the closing of the Top O’ the Senator jazz club. While the Senator’s closure was related to the need for more theatre diners to fuel its adjacent dining room, jazz promoter Sybil Walker flouted industry speculation that Bistro owners Lothar and Brigitte Lang simply accelerated a discussed retirement because of a lease disagreement with their landlord.

In brief emails to the Toronto Star Lothar wrote: “After a long fight to overcome several severe setbacks and with no immediate help on the horizon, we had to close…. We wish the circumstances were different. It is not easy for all of us to realize that after 25 years we just lost our livelihood.”

The Langs, married 33 years, were honoured for lifetime achievement at the National Jazz Awards earlier this year.

It won’t be easy for jazz lovers to find a replacement for the 25-year-old institution, comparable to New York’s celebrated Village Vanguard for the plethora of talent and notable recordings it has hosted.
