Tony Williams, Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Ron Carter
Trying to expand your scale theory? There’s a lots of great stuff at jazz-ed.net. Ed Petersen has put together a book of pentatonic studies with some great ideas. It also includes a catalog of all 330 possible interval combinations of five pitches. (Or, every combination of five pitches that include “C” as one of the pitches)
Also check his diminished scale studies.
That should keep you busy over the weekend.
Bridget Kearney, Jazz Composer and Double Bass, Wins John Lennon Songwriting Award. Know normally I might have skipped over this bit of news since it’s a bit removed from my regular T-Dot focus, but how could I ignore a song title like this?
“Sometimes When I’m Drunk and You’re Wearing My Favorite Shirt,”
Her entry, an ironic exploration of ambivalent feelings about a potential lover won for the best jazz song. She is one of 12 winners in as many categories and, along with a $5000 advance from EMI Music Publishing, she will receive a 1000-copy CD recording of her music. In earlier rounds, she won project studio equipment worth $5000 and a $500 gift certificate. She will now compete against the other 12 prize winners for the Maxell Song of the Year Award and a $20,000 prize. Congratulations!
On Saturday May 13th at 7:30pm the all-girl jazz vocal trio, Swing Rosie will perform a rather unique set at The CD-ROM Store, 345 Danforth Avenue, Toronto. What’s unique? The live concert performance will take place before a small studio audience and be simultaneously broadcast live-to-Web.
Tickets for the studio audience are $60 (including refreshments) and can be purchased from the CD-ROM Store. The Internet broadcast is free although viewers are encouraged to pre-register in order to help plan bandwidth needs.
Proceeds from the event go towards buying new Macintosh computers for Toronto’s Ronald McDonald House and Bloorview Kids Rehab.
